Charcoal Briquette HS Code & Import Duty

Coconut shell charcoal briquette has its own dedicated HS code, separate from the generic "other wood charcoal" catch-all — getting it wrong on a customs entry is a fixable but expensive mistake.

Charcoal Briquette HS Code & Import Duty

Coconut shell charcoal is one of the more commonly misclassified products we see at the documentation stage — not because the rule is obscure, but because it changed. A code that was correct before 2022 is now the wrong one, and a broker working from an old reference will file the wrong subheading without realizing it.

The correct HS code

Coconut shell charcoal briquette is classified under Indonesia's BTKI heading 4402.20.10 — "of shell or nut (coconut shell)" — a dedicated subheading under 44.02 (wood charcoal, including shell or nut charcoal). This is distinct from 4402.10.00 (bamboo charcoal) and from 4402.90.00, the general "other" catch-all. Confirmed directly against the official Direktorat Jenderal Bea dan Cukai tariff schedule for Chapter 44 — not a secondary summary.

We've seen customs entries filed under 4402.90.10, which was the correct code before the 2022 BTKI revision gave coconut shell charcoal its own dedicated subheading under 4402.20. A broker working from an outdated reference sheet will file the pre-2022 code without knowing it changed — worth confirming your broker is working from the current tariff book, not a saved template from a previous shipment.

This code covers 100% coconut shell — blends need separate confirmation

4402.20.10 applies specifically to charcoal made from coconut shell. Our hardwood-and-coconut-shell BBQ blend and our sawdust-based briquette are different raw material compositions, and depending on the blend ratio may fall under a different subheading (4402.20.90 or 4402.90.00) — we don't assume the coconut-shell code applies automatically to a blended product, and neither should your broker. Confirm the specific product's classification against its actual composition before filing.

What to send your customs broker

  • HS code 4402.20.10 for our 100% coconut shell Shisha/Hookah charcoal, confirmed on the commercial invoice and packing list
  • Certificate of Origin, and Certificate of Analysis from PT Carsurin for lots requiring quality documentation
  • Product description matching customs language — "coconut shell charcoal briquette" rather than generic "charcoal", to avoid a default to the general wood-charcoal catch-all

Working with Nusawara

Every coconut shell charcoal briquette shipment ships with HS 4402.20.10 correctly stated on all documentation. We don't file customs entries on the buyer's behalf, but we make sure the paperwork we control never causes a misclassification on your end.
