• 03Neither certification implies the other — a lot can be organically farmed with no Fairtrade pricing structure in place, or Fairtrade-certified while still using conventional farming inputs

When buyers actually need both

Retail brands building a full ethical-sourcing narrative — organic for the ingredient claim, Fairtrade for the labor and community story — typically want both, and are willing to pay the combined premium because both certifications drive shelf placement and price point independently. B2B ingredient buyers supplying manufacturing where the end product isn't marketed on either claim rarely need to pay for both.

Cost and availability trade-offs

What to verify before ordering

• 01Confirm which specific claim your retail packaging will make, and only pay for the certification(s) that claim requires
• 02Request the current certificate for the specific lot, not the cooperative's general registration — certifications lapse and get renewed on their own cycle
• 03If ordering dual-certified stock, confirm lead time upfront — availability is narrower than either certification alone
